Do you need a degree, training or certification to work in IT?

While many people will say of course not. I firmly believe it helps get your foot into the door on opportunities you will never have without additional training. Even a starting network support position will be filled faster by someone with a college degree,. technical training or an IT certification.

The best jobs will always go to the most qualified and having both a college degree and IT certification is the best solution.

Don't forget to work in the computer lab, especially if you have no working experience. Many a new IT positions are filled by computer lab assistants.

Upgrading your skills

Do not underestimate keeping your skills up to pace with the fast changing MIS environment. You simply cannot say you have nothing more to learn about any career field. If you are not working on a degree or certification, you should consider additional training classes on the specific topics you need to improve your career promotion possibilities.

Many technical and classes are one night a week or one weekend day. You might even consider using a week of vacation to learn some new skills that your employer may not be willing to reimburse.

Web classes can be taken at YOUR your pace. You no longer have excuses for not improving your career skills when you can take classes any time of the day or night and anywhere you can access the web.

Finally, classes (even online classes) are another place to network with potential employment contacts.
